Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman and Kosovo-Metohija Committee Chairperson Take Part in Social Dialogue on "Child, Early and Forced Marriages"

The Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue, in cooperation with the Roma Women's Network, Roma Women’s Centre “Bibija” and the Trag Foundation, organised the social dialogue on the prevention of child, early and forced marriages on 5 April 2024.

The participants spoke of the negative phenomenon stressing that though is still present in our society, Serbia has recognised this problem and is taking decisive measures to prevent child, early and forced marriages. At the gathering, the participants had the opportunity to learn about the initiatives to change the legislative framework so as to contribute to a more adequate response to this negative phenomenon, as well as good practice examples and stories from the lives of Roma women and their experiences and personal attitudes regarding the issue.

Congratulating International Roma Day to the members of the Roma national minority, the Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Aleksandar Markovic pointed out that it is the duty of the state and its institutions, including the National Assembly, to pay special attention to children. He confirmed the Committee’s willingness to continue working, together with all other actors, on solving the problem of early child marriages, which mostly affect the Roma population. He welcomed the activities of the National Coalition to End Child Marriage and Roma women's organisations, which are very determined and persistent in their efforts to stop this phenomenon. He especially emphasised that nowadays early child marriages cannot be understood as a Roma tradition, but as a violation of child rights.

In her address, the Chairperson of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija MA Danijela Vujicic emphasised the importance and role of education in the development of every child, and that it is through the educational process that one gains the knowledge crucial for preventing early marriages. Vujicic stressed that the state of Serbia invests significant funds in schools and the education of Serbian children living on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija and that Roma children attend school along Serbian children and share the same fate with them. We are talking here about differences and what we have done as a society to avoid them, but we are equal in pain, sorrow and the same fate that befell us in Kosovo-Metohija. Parents and children of non-Albanian nationality in Kosovo-Metohija are exposed to various forms of terror by the Pristina authorities every day. Although the state of Serbia is investing great efforts to facilitate the return of displaced persons to their hearths in Kosovo-Metohija, Pristina's policy continues to threaten basic human rights and calls into question the survival of Serbs, Roma and other non-Albanian population living in the Kosovo-Metohija. The Committee Chairperson congratulated International Roma Day to all Roma men and women.
